There comes a point in adulthood when you realize your mother was right about a whole bunch of shit.

And honestly?  It's irritating.

She told you to take a jacket. You didn't. You were cold.  She told you to clean your room.  You didn't.  Then you couldn't find anything.  She told you not to make that face because someday it would stick that way.

Okay, maybe that one was bullshit.  But the woman had a point.

The worst part?

You spend years trying to prove your parents wrong, only to wake up one day standing in your kitchen saying the exact same things they used to say.

"Turn the damn lights off."

"Who left this door open?"

"We have food at home."

"Because I said so."

Congratulations.  You've officially become your mother.  Or your father.  Possibly both. And somewhere along the way, you also learned that your parents weren't trying to ruin your childhood.  They were just tired.  Really tired.

Which explains a lot.

Because now you understand why "What do you want for dinner?" can feel like a personal attack after you've been asked it 900 times.  You finally understand why your dad sat in the garage drinking a beer without talking to anybody.

That wasn't weird.  That was self-care.  And maybe that's the real grit of growing up.

You figure things out.  You get knocked around a little.  You learn what matters.

And eventually you realize the people who drove you crazy were often just trying to prepare you for the exact bullshit you're dealing with now.

Gritty Tip of the Week

If you hear yourself saying something your parents used to say, don't panic.  Just accept your fate.

You're one "Turn that damn music down" away from becoming them.

The Grit Fix

When life starts sounding suspiciously like your mother's voice in your head, grab a sarcastic shirt, crack a cold one, and embrace it.

You earned this shit.

Final Flip

Maybe Mom wasn't wrong.  Maybe Dad wasn't either.  Don't tell them I said that.

I have a reputation to maintain.

Cheers, bitches. 🍺
